Easter Dress and Bow Tie Tutorial

If you haven't already, check out the Fabulous Followers Giveaway post below.

I'm having a hard time believing that Easter is in 2 days! Outside it is feeling a lot like Christmas...not Easter. This is what we woke up to this morning:

I've been putting off making my daughter's Easter dress this year--mainly because I was having a hard time finding a pattern I liked.  That is until I found Christine's fun blog:

She has some really cute tutorials and I fell in love with her One Hour Sundress.  It took me the afternoon to make from start to finish, but next time I will be able to whip it up a lot faster.  Here is how ours turned out!

I also added a little bow onto the bottom ruffle.  Cute, right??? Tay loves this dress, I had a hard getting her to take it off!

I couldn't just make my daughter something for Easter and not my boy, so I searched the blogs and Google for a little boy's bow tie.  I found lots of good tutorials for bow ties made out of ribbon, but I wanted to use up some scrap fabric pieces.  Since I couldn't find a tutorial for those--they are probably out there, I just couldn't find one!--I decided to come up with something myself.

Here is what you need:

  • 10"x6" piece of scrap fabric
  • 3"x6" piece of scrap fabric
  • Some elastic--I used 1/2" thick
  • Sewing machine, scissors, thread
  • Hot Glue
  • Iron

First take your 10"x6" fabric scrap and fold it in half so that the right side of the fabric is touching and sew down the side.  Do the same with your smaller fabric scrap.

Turn your pieces right-side out and press with the seams down the middle.
With your bigger piece, fold the ends over to meet in the middle and sew down.
Next take your elastic and measure it around your boys neck. It is easiest to measure when he is wearing the collared shirt he will wear with the bow tie.  Just make sure it isn't too tight or too loose.  Sew the ends of the elastic together and sew the elastic onto your large fabric piece.

After the elastic is sewn on, take the smaller fabric piece and wrap it around the larger piece.  You can hand sew this part if you want, but I strongly dislike hand sewing so I just added a few dabs of hot glue to secure it.  Fluff it up and play around with it a little to get the look you want and there you go!

A cute bow tie for your cute little gentleman! (Doesn't mine look thrilled?)

These are so cute! I made some regular ties using elastic a while back. I get people finding the link who are looking for bow ties too. I'm going to add your link to that post, so those people can find what they're looking for.

i am so glad to have found your tutorial...i wanted something to go with my sons Easter outfit and i knew a bow tie would be the perfect thing. so tonight after he went to bed i whipped one up out of a fun vintage fabric that i thought would go with what he was wearing. Hopefully i will be able to put some pictures of him in all his Easter finery on my blog soon. thank you for the easy to follow tutorial.

I know it may seem odd getting a comment on an Easter post, but I finally got around to making this bow tie. It was super easy! Thank you so much. I wrote a little blurb on my blog about it.

Thanks

Made a bowtie with this tutorial for Easter this year - it was great! Thank goodness for a glue gun to help hold that little strip of fabric around the tie. I posted a pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/57904164@N05/5665918830/in/photostream
